I have been participating in parades for a number of years as an elected official, but what I experienced this past July 4th was astounding. It was my privilege to be part of 3 great traditional Independence Day parades which took place in Dundalk, Kingsville, and Bel Air. My day started at 8 in the morning when I lined up with other elected officials for the popular Dundalk Independence Day parade. My presentation consisted of my wife, Valerie and I in the back of a pick-up truck, each holding up a sign which produced the astounding reaction I referred to earlier. The sign simply read “Pat McDonough Delegate” with a big section proclaiming “Speak English.”

The initiative has nothing to do with forcing individuals to speak English. One needs not travel any farther than the telephone to be irritated by the ever present “Press 1 for English, Press 2 for Spanish, etc.” | |
